Purpose, People, and Courage: What Contributes To A Record‑Breaking Parish Walk

Some performances are defined by the clock. Most are defined by the story behind them. This year’s Parish Walk record wasn’t just an incredible sporting achievement, it was a powerful reminder of what happens when purpose, support, and courage align.

Sponsored-athlete Callum Gawne’s post-race reflections are incredibly insightful. I’ve made some comments on his reflections below, to draw out the lessons for other athletes looking to do incredible things.

1. Purpose and Meaning Drive Performance

What stands out most for me in Callum’s reflection is the deep sense of meaning attached to the event. For him, the Parish Walk is more than just a race. That sense of purpose comes across so clearly.

When an athlete knows why they’re doing something, they can endure more, stay committed longer, and find strength in moments where motivation alone would fail.

Seeing the kids he coaches lining the route, feeling the island’s support, and wanting to be a role model - these are the kinds of intrinsic drivers that sustain athletes through the hardest parts of the journey.

2. The Power of a Great Support Team

No one reaches a record‑breaking performance alone. This story is a masterclass in how to put together a brilliant support network that helps set you up for success:

  • experienced coaches who invest their time and belief

  • physios and therapists who help keep the physical body in tip-top condition

  • friends who step in to provide tangible and emotional support, and

  • a community whose encouragement turns that lonely training into something meaningful.

A strong support team doesn’t just help an athlete perform well. It protects wellbeing, buffers against stress, and provides the emotional stability needed to pursue ambitious goals.

Every incredible achievement is truly a collective effort, not just an individual one.

3. The Psychological Impact of Injury

An important part of this journey happened away from the spotlight. After last year’s win came a period many athletes will recognise: injury, frustration, and the slow erosion of confidence. Injuries don’t just interrupt training; they challenge identity, purpose, and self-belief. They create fear of reinjury, doubt about capability, and a sense of losing ground.

I’ve written more on the psychology of injury here: https://www.richsille.com/blog/proven-rehab-strategies

Following last year’s win, Callum and I started working together in earnest and I’m proud to say he is one of three sponsored athletes I collaborate with. That support has allowed him to access regular psychological input at a time when he needed it most.

Sweating is the easy bit!

It takes courage to look inward; to recognise your flaws and frailties, and to take action to develop those aspects of your character. That’s where my role is so important - to support that personal development.

Nobody sees this part of sport. And it’s hard work. But it’s what creates a solid foundation for success.

When working with athletes, we often compare it to the physical training and acknowledge that, in many ways, sweating is the easy bit!

A PARISH WALK Record Built on More Than Fitness

This Parish Walk record wasn’t just a demonstration of physical endurance. It was built on an understanding of the power of purpose, the strength of a trusted support team, and the importance of prioritising courage - doing the right thing rather than the easy thing.

It’s a reminder that the most meaningful achievements in sport aren’t just about winning, they’re also about the journey. They’re about who you become on the way there, the people who help you get there, and the people you can help along the way.

NOTES

The Parish Walk is the Isle of Man’s equivalent of the London Marathon, expected to raise around £600k for charities each year. An 85-mile walk around the island. All to be completed within a 24-hour time limit. Only around 10% of starters finish. It’s a gruelling physical and psychological challenge.
