ATHLETE CASE STUDY 1: Conquering Inner Demons
A Client Transformation Story: TRIUMPH OVER ADVERSITY
Every champion has a story!
Just ask my client, James - a pseudonym, because confidentiality is as important to me as it is you.
When James first came to me at Rich Sille Sport Psychology, he was struggling.
A promising athlete on a professional team, James was underperforming. He was uncertain about his future (as are so many professional athletes), leaving him feeling inadequate and lost.
His confidence was “shot”, motivation was at an all-time low and he was consumed by self-doubt.
Mentally, he was trapped “in a dark place”. He felt helpless and isolated.
James was…
feeling helpless and isolated, in a “dark place”
James knew he needed a change but didn’t know where to begin.
Through the FREE discovery call and subsequent sessions, we created a personalised plan tailored to his unique situation.
We focused on going back to basics, understanding:
how his background influenced his identity, in and out of sport
his motivation - what drove him to train so hard each day
the processes that had worked so well for him in the past
what give him confidence and belief in his abilities
what tools and support would be most beneficial to help him overcome mental barriers and performance challenges.
As we worked together, James understood he had a safe space to be vulnerable. A safe space to express and process the challenges he was facing.
Little by little, the fog began to lift.
This revealed a clearer perspective and a rekindled passion for his sport.
Through evidence-based solutions and ongoing support, he began to uncover the self-awareness and self-belief that he had long thought lost.
Today, James is back to his best. Performing better and feeling better.
Not only is he a national champion, he is content forging his own path, doing things his way.
All this has resulted in him being named on the long list for the Olympic Games in 2028!
James is now…
on the long list for the Olympic Games!
The transformation James achieved is remarkable.
And now, he continues to strive for even higher performance levels, armed with the psychology needed to excel.
Moral of the story:
When you embrace the support of a trained psychologist, you can gain extraordinary outcomes.

ATHLETE CASE STUDY 2: FROM ANXIETY TO EXCITEMENT
Building Belief, Seizing Opportunities & Performing Proudly
Claire S (Pseudonym) is British Champion, Jiu-Jitsu. Claire’s story is taken directly from her social media feed:
Smiling my little head off at [my first premier Jiu-Jitsu comp] last month.
Honestly, the more I look at this the more incredible I realise it is.
Nerves have always been an issue for me competing. When I was a child, I banned my parents from watching my [sporting] comps because my nerves were so bad - I was terrified I'd perform badly and let people down.
At my first [Jiu-Jitsu] comp I was so nervous. I felt sick for weeks beforehand, and when I stepped out to compete I was so full of adrenaline I literally couldn't see.
Being physically ready is one thing but the mental side of competition prep is just as important, and for me it was definitely holding me back.
A couple of years ago, ahead of my first [big Jiu-Jitsu] comp, I started seeing a sports psychologist, Rich... Holy Moly, what a worthwhile investment! I've shifted my mindset, made and tested personal strategies and completely turned my mental game around.
I see a photo of me, doing my walkout, into the spotlights, with the MC, commentators, audience, cameras, knowing all eyes were on me, with that big, relaxed smile on my face and feeling nothing but excitement and good feelings, and I'm so proud of me (and I'm never proud of me)!
Getting my head straight has enabled me to put myself out there, and as a result I've had opportunities like I would never have believed.
It's still a work in progress but I'm already achieving more than I ever thought possible.
